Mike Reinstein : 8th January 2010
Report by Harry Bolter

Mike is no stranger to the club, having been a regular floor singer since its inception in September 2008. During this time, regulars at the club have seen Mike blossom into a confident and professional singer/songwriter. This should be no great surprise, as Mike has a history of performing with various groups, groups that have supported such names as Manfred Mann and Richard Digance.

Nowadays Mike sings alone, with help from his wife Reina who joins in on harmonies when required.

Mike's songs are brilliantly crafted with thoughtful lyrics and blues-based accompaniments. Mike's first EP, "Bring back the Day", was launched on his appearance at the club, and all the tracks were played - from the atmospheric title track (which is about Ray Charles) through to "Tungsten Not Lead" (an ironic view of the green and compassionate BAE industries).

Mike also played the popular "Hitler’s Pinkie" as well as a couple of children's songs, which he plays in primary schools in the Brighton area. Teachers were well catered for in his set. "Low Morale" had Harriet and host Robb laughing and singing in agreement, as it charted the fate of the working teacher.

Mike's songs are insightful, sometimes sad, but always thought-provoking, and with sing-a-long choruses which the audience enjoyed. Check him out on www.myspace.com/michaelhreinstein

It was a foul evening outside the pub, so floor singers were in short supply. However, I thoroughly enjoyed three songs from Ali of Transmission studios, who borrowed Robb’s guitar to perform. His own song "Popcorn", and "Imagination" from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory were sung to great effect.
