Reg Meuross : 5th March 2010
Report by Harry Bolter

We somewhat nervously approached our old home on Friday. Would the pub be open at all? When I had looked in during the week there had been plenty to do. Would our room be ready? But no need to worry!

Trying to get into the pub with two light stands, bags of bulbs, and host Robb’s guitar case (which always seems to be three times the size of the instrument) was very difficult - in short, the pub was packed, and it had only been opened two hours! Clearly the efforts of Graham, the new landlord, and Harveys, the brewer, had been noticed and the publicity had gone very well indeed. Welcome to the "Poets Corner".

Our room is transformed - new curtains, windows that open, and dimmer lights provide a splendid environment to watch the club's favourite guest, Reg Meuross, who was back for his second visit.

The pub was in access-all-areas mode, and with no admission charge many of the drinkers came from the pub to ask, "What is a folk club?" and "How often do you meet?" Robb was kept busy answering questions as well as trying to marshal the floor singers.

Reg treated us to songs from his wealth of material. His voice is both haunting and tuneful and his guitar playing accompanies his songs perfectly. Harriet and the assembled fans joined in with not only the choruses but the verses too!

At half-time the bar staff brought round snacks, and the raffle was seen to be the only thing that hadn’t improved - prizes still featuring plastic toys and old books! Still, this matters little, as all funds went to Reg - who performed brilliantly in the second half to win three encores and wasn’t allowed to finish until 11.30.

Another great night for the club and the introduction of a new era. Come along next month - it's a great venue.
