Robb Johnson: Friday 6th May 2011 This meet was as near to May Day as we could get it so a political singer was required - and they don't come any more political than Robb Johnson. Robb played songs from his catalogue of literally thousands of songs, blending the brand new "Karl Marx" with the much older "Evergreen", which he dedicated to Roger Watson who sadly has had to give up music through ill health and whom I feel privileged to have seen at the club just a year earlier. "Overnight" was requested and dedicated to Robb's charming wife Meeta; it's a splendid song and, although quite an old number, still rings true today. Robb also played his crowd-pleasing songs such as "Homecoming Queen" from the "Love, Death and Politics" album and "Place in the Country" from the "Man Walks into a Pub" acoustic album. The evening ended with all musicians joining together for "Win Lose or Draw", Robb shouting out the chords as guitars were strummed, harmonicas blown (and sucked), violins bowed and ukuleles fortunately drowned out. There was as usual a big turnout of floor singers, all vying for a place at this popular club. James played some excellent guitar and sang his new song; Alex was also in fine voice and gave a taste of her upcoming appearance at the Komedia, Brighton. Mike Reinstein and Reina sang a couple of Mike's songs; you can hear more from him on the 20th when he launches his album at the Poets' Corner. Roger Stevens played with Robb for a couple of numbers, including one with a blown keyboard - not sure what the instrument was called but, as well as sounding good, it caused much amusement in the audience. Newcomers Sin City played two country-style songs and finally James Clifford gave us a sample of his upcoming show in the Brighton Festival Fringe. Finally POG played a great song about boot sales accompanied by the Bandanas' violin player, Bethan. All this for a fiver - great value, splendid music, and can’t wait for next month.
