Swill: Friday 7th October 2011
Report by Harry Bolter

I knew there would be a lot of people, so I got lots of chairs up from the garden; I knew that there were lots of floor singers, so took along a large notebook to list them and their songs; I knew I shouldn’t have had that last pint of Harveys’ Eastbourne Star because, having made lots of notes, I left them behind in the pub.

All the floor singers were great and kept strictly to time. I’m sorry if I don’t mention them all but Marimba were a fantastic female close harmony group who entertained us with traditional songs.  Previous guests Trevor, Ruth and Mike all played new songs.

Swill needed little introduction to the folk club regulars as he had played the club before when we were in our temporary accommodation in the Lord Nelson, Brighton. He had brought along Paul Simmonds so we had half of The Men They Couldn’t Hang to entertain us.

Swill had a new EP of covers out, named after the Kris Kristofferson song “Sunday Morning Coming Down”, and he sang the song as well as others from the EP. Swill was joined up front by Paul who had sung earlier with Naomi Bedford and Paul of the Gutterhearts, who also had entertained with his 12-string guitar. They finished off the evening with some rousing Men They Couldn’t Hang songs like “Ironmasters” and the one about “walking and talking to myself” which I can never remember the title of.

As Robb says, it was a cornucopia of delights; and as Swill said,  it’s like “a mini festival - so much song and playing”.  Thanks for everyone who made it such a splendid night. Fantastic.
